The slow dynamics of postural sway are in the feedback loop

چکیده
Postural sway is considered to have two fundamental stochastic components, a slow non-oscillatory component and a faster damped-oscillatory component. The slow component has been shown to account for the majority of sway variance during quiet stance. Postural control is generally viewed as a feedback loop in which sway is detected by sensory systems and appropriate motor commands are generated to stabilize the body’s orientation. Whereas the mechanistic source for the damped-oscillatory sway component is most likely feedback control of an inverted pendulum, the underlying basis for the slow component is less clear. We investigated whether the slow process was inside or outside the feedback loop by providing standing subjects with sum-of-sines visual motion. Linear stochastic models were fit to the experimental sway trajectories to determine the stochastic structure of sway as well as the transfer function from visual motion to sway. The results supported a fifthorder stochastic model, consisting of a slow process and two damped-oscillatory components. Importantly, the slow process was determined to be inside the feedback loop. This supports the hypothesis that the slow component is due to errors in state estimation, since state estimation is inside the feedback loop, rather than a moving reference point or an exploratory process outside the feedback loop.

متن کاملNonlinear Guidance Law with Finite Time Convergence Considering Control Loop Dynamics
In this paper a new nonlinear guidance law with finite time convergence is proposed. The second order integrated guidance and control loop is formulated considering a first order control loop dynamics. By transforming the state equations to the normal form, a finite time stabilizer feedback linearization technique is proposed to guarantee the finite time convergence of the system states to zero...
متن کاملContributions of delayed visual feedback and cognitive task load to postural dynamics.
In this experiment, we examined the extent to which postural control is influenced by visual and cognitive task performance. Fourteen healthy young participants performed a balance task in eyes-open (EO) and delayed visual feedback (DVF) conditions. DVF was presented at delays ranging from 0 to 1200ms in 300ms increments. Cognitive load was implemented by a simple, serial arithmetic task. High ...

We performed an experiment in which we challenged postural stability in 12 healthy subjects by providing artificial delayed visual feedback. A monitor at eye-height presented subjects with a visual representation of the location of their center-of-pressure (COP) and they were instructed to position their COP as accurately as possible on a small target. Visual feedback of the COP was displayed e...
متن کاملUse of galvanic vestibular feedback to control postural orientation in decerebrate rabbits.
In quadrupeds, the dorsal-side-up body orientation during standing is maintained due to a postural system that is driven by feedback signals coming mainly from limb mechanoreceptors. In caudally decerebrated (postmammillary) rabbits, the efficacy of this system is considerably reduced. In this paper, we report that the efficacy of postural control in these animals can be restored with galvanic ...
